Role Description

Are you looking for a career as an Engineering Technician?

Our technicians are crucial to the success of the University and our ability to deliver world-leading research. We are therefore seeking to attract a highly motivated individual to develop into a skilled engineering technician through a formal apprenticeship.

The School of Water, Energy and Environment leads in delivering Cranfield’s Mission for the themes of Water, Energy and Power and Environment and Agrifood. The School is committed to leading in its areas of expertise through investing in world class staff and facilities over the long term.

Cranfield’s expertise in energy and power covers a range of the potential energy solutions, from our ongoing relationship with oil and gas, to our developing reliance on renewable energy from the world around us. The changing energy landscape presents exciting opportunities and the potential for the UK to lead in new technologies and services related to low carbon energy and power generation.

This training position will develop you to have the competence to contribute to a number of long-term research projects, working collegiately with academic, research and technical staff within the Energy and Power theme.

You will have the ability and desire to learn and work as part of a team to provide a technical provision to Energy and Power colleagues, to ensure high quality delivery of research projects.

The apprenticeship will be designed towards development of aptitude and capabilities through academic study and learning on the job from more experienced colleagues, and from through exposure to a range of activities.

You must be prepared to enrol for a course of study leading to an approved qualification.  Successfully completing this training will lead to a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in “Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician”.

You will require a good standard of numeracy and literacy; have good communication skills both written and verbal; be able to work as part of a team; use your own initiative and be enthusiastic to learn new skills/tasks. You will have achieved up to 5 GCSE’s at grade 9-4 and above including Mathematics, English and Science (or equivalent level qualifications or relevant experience).

For an informal discussion, please contact Dr Stuart Wagland, Senior Lecturer in Energy & Environmental Chemistry, on (T); +44 (0)1234 750111 Ext. 2404 or (E); s.t.wagland@cranfield.ac.uk

At Cranfield, we value Diversity and Inclusion, and aim to create and maintain a culture in which everyone can work and study together harmoniously with dignity and respect and realise their full potential. We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role.

As part of our commitment to support and develop Technical staff across the University, we have now also become a founding signatory of the Science Council's Technician Commitment. This is a sector wide, collaborative initiative led by the Science Council and supported by the 'Technicians Make It Happen' campaign, to ensure visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians working in higher education and research.

Your career at Cranfield will be enhanced through access to fully equipped shared laboratory and pilot facilities, extensive research and business training through our learning and development team and doctoral training centres in a collegiate and supportive environment.

Interviews to be held: 04 September 2019
