The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences is passionate about the principles and applications of Science and Technology in all its forms and strives to be excellent in research, teaching and innovation. 

Working within the Department of Applied Sciences, in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, you will provide expertise in the area of biochemistry, to further enhance research, teaching and entrepreneurial activities. This will include designing, developing and delivering high quality teaching provision, undertaking research to produce quality academic outputs and participating in external activity to generate income and promote the subject area. The role will also include the teaching of medical students on a joint venture programme between Northumbria University and St George’s University Medical School in Grenada.

Biochemistry is an established aspect of the Department’s research and teaching portfolio, with state-of-the-art facilities for research, including recently refurbished well equipped laboratories for biochemistry and molecular biology, microscopy suite (including fluorescence and laser capture), tissue culture, complemented by high performance computing and dedicated facilities for metabolomics, proteomics and genomics (including MySeq and PacBio sequencing platforms). Our research-informed teaching supports our professionally accredited programmes.

Academics in biochemistry were a significant part of the University’s success in the recent REF exercise, submitting into Unit of Assessment 3 (Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy), placing Northumbria in the top 50 Universities for research power.

The successful candidate must hold a first degree and be qualified to Doctoral level in biochemistry; have subject expertise in an area such as biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics or structural biology with specialist knowledge gained through research activity, professional practice or consultancy. A proven ability to deliver high quality research led teaching and have an appropriate publication profile is essential.  Applicants with an interest in collaboration across discipline boundaries are encouraged to apply.
