Part time - 15 hours per week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays), permanent

To provide a full range of careers guidance activities, including one to one support, workshops and presentations, to undergraduate and postgraduate students at centres of the School of Business & Technology and to support University Apprenticeship programmes

The post-holder is expected to:

  1. Deliver key services including but not limited to
    • one-to-one appointments and drop-ins (in person, telephone and online)
    • responding to emailed requests including quick queries and document reviews
    • a range of careers workshops and other activities, both within academic programmes and independently
    • developing relationships with employers in order to create mentoring and placement opportunities, and involve them in employer talks, careers fairs and   vacancy advertisements
    • promoting the service to potential students through open days, to current staff and students, and to employers
    • gaining involvement of tutors in mock interviews
    • providing consultancy to academic colleagues in preparing their students for their working life
    • contributing a professional input to the development of online careers service resources,  utilising CareerHub and the VLE
    • supporting, as a team member, the successful delivery of BPP’s ‘Career Ready’ Strategy
    • taking a lead and supporting project-based work to support enhancements and development of BPP Careers Service.
  2. Assist in developing printed and online guides on a range of careers and employability issues
  3. Work closely with other members of the Careers Service to share knowledge and best practice and ensure a consistent service is provided
  4. Represent and promote the Careers Service internally and externally
  5. Record data on services provided, producing reports and statistics as required
  6. Make suggestions for improvements to and development of the Careers Service, and working on the implementation of changes where required
  7. Maintain an awareness of current developments in relevant areas and of developments in the practices of peers and competitors
  8. Adhere to the policies of the Careers Service and the wider company, in particular Confidentiality, Data Protection, Health and Safety and Equal Opportunities; and support the Careers Service continued Matrix accreditation
  9.  Assist in similar provision at other centres as required
  10. Perform from time to time such other duties as may be consistent with the post

Skills, knowledge and qualifications required

Essential

  • Ideally be educated to degree-level, however applications from candidates with appropriate and relevant work experience or other equivalent qualifications will also be considered. 
  • Knowledge and experience of working in a Careers service with Higher Education students or in careers guidance services or in graduate recruitment
  • Knowledge of the labour market aligned to the professions of business, finance and technology in particular, including the recruitment and selection practices of employers and emerging trends
  • An understanding of the skills and personal attributes that support ‘career readiness’
  • Experience working with EU and international students
  • Experience of delivering services on a one-to-one basis as well as to groups
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and networking skills with a variety of stakeholders
  • Proven ability to set own goals in addition to achieving given targets within deadlines
  • Ability to use initiative and work under pressure
  • Ability to produce clear and concise written and oral reports
  • Understanding of the need to learn, share knowledge and build relationships within a team
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Please note that this role will involve working hours to cover evening and weekend demands as necessary and alternative days when required

Desirable

  • Completion of (or working towards) Postgraduate Diploma in Careers Education, Information and Guidance (or a similar qualification)
  • Experience and/or training in coaching approaches
  • Experience in presenting to large groups
  • Experience in writing and delivering training sessions
  • Understanding of advice and guidance to students keen to explore enterprise opportunities, including the Tier 1 Start-up Visa for Early Stage Entrepreneurs

The successful candidate will work 2 full days, these days being Tuesday and Wednesday.

Where evening work is required, the first evening of a week will accrue time off in lieu. Additional weekday evenings and/or weekends will be paid as overtime.
