Job Description
University College is seeking well-qualified and experienced English language instructors to teach language skills either in the English foundation or English for Academic Purposes Program. courses. University College caters for students at CEFR A1 – B2 level who need the equivalent of an Overall IELTS 5.5 Band Score before they can enroll in college courses. Instructors for University College teach 12 – 18 hours per week, provide four hours of program support committee work, and have a daily office hour. Instructors are required to proctor examinations, sometimes in the evenings or on Saturdays. For all English courses, there is a set curriculum and pacing guide, but instructors are encouraged to be pedagogically creative in pitching or creating materials and activities for their particular classes. Instructors should be familiar with educational technology, for example learning management systems such as Blackboard and the use of Smartboards and iPads.
Minimum Qualification
Minimum Qualification Master’s degree in TESOL/Applied Linguistics, or closely related field
Preferred Qualification
As well as relevant Master’s degree, specific teaching qualification such as RSA/Trinity CELTA or DELTA, PGCE, or similar teaching-focused postgraduate diploma. Having an additional Masters in another field or a qualification in Special Needs Education is an advantage.
Expected Skills/Rank/Experience
Applicants should have a minimum of three years’ experience in similar programs and be comfortable in a multi-cultural environment. Applicants should also be sensitive to the particular cultural considerations of students the Gulf region and a diverse expatriate workforce. Knowledge of and experience in communicative instructional approaches and teaching academic writing are essential. Applicants should be flexible, independent, and enthusiastic about working in an environment with rapidly changing policies and new educational initiatives. Applicants should be comfortable in an institutional structure which expects adherence to punctuality, deadlines, project commitments, administrative policies, and procedures. Interested applicants should have a positive, proactive attitude, and want to contribute to dynamic program growth, and curriculum/material design for new educational initiatives.
