Director, Environmental Health & Safety - University Operations

New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint a Director, Environmental Health & Safety reporting to the Executive Director, Facilities & Projects.

The Director is responsible for directing NYUAD University efforts to ensure students, faculty, staff and guests on the Saadiyat campus are kept from harm through establishing environmental and occupational health and safety prevention programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct NYUAD University efforts to ensure students, faculty, staff and guests on the Saadiyat campus are kept from harm through establishing environmental and occupational health and safety prevention programs in addition manage environmental sustainability programs and initiatives
  • Develop new environmental and occupational safety and health policies and procedures for institution, and sustain existing and new environmental, health and safety committees, representing the diversity of the NYUAD Saadiyat campus
  • Direct auditing of University facilities to ensure programs are implemented and provide support to departments in maintenance of these programs
  • Utilize audits and quality assurance reports to improve quality of services
  • Work with and maintain emergency response plan
  • Integrate response efforts with other University departments
  • Establish and assist in maintenance of the floor warden, emergency responders, and first aiders’ lists throughout campus. Develop tailored training programs, and train wardens, RAs, first aiders and emergency responders to effectively assist safely in emergency situations
  • Develop the EHS training program/platform, extend and make EHS training programs available to all departments. Maintain auditable training records and evaluate need for additional programs. Promote safety awareness across the University
  • Collaborate with NYUAD HR regarding training, and coordinate to incorporate safety evaluation in the employee performance evaluation process
  • Develop and supervise staff, including hiring, training, and evaluating performance and direct University emergency response to environmental and occupational safety and health issues
  • Train staff to provide emergency response
     
  • Develop and manage budget process; allocate and control spending in accordance with institutional guidelines and program needs; develop effective cost saving programs evaluate practices and identify areas of excessive material and/or costs
  • Serve as primary liaison with government agencies and insurance companies on University issues with respect to sustainability, environmental health and occupational safety issues
  • Develop relationships and partnerships with the different authorities having jurisdiction and consulting firms and businesses in the health and safety realm. Review regulations and information on environmental and occupational health and safety issues
  • Initiate corrective action regarding programmatic issues when necessary
  • Oversee effective responses to requests from regulatory agencies. Communicate need for new policies and procedures to University Leadership, deans and department chairs
  • Develop short and long range objectives to increase effectiveness and efficiency for Environmental/Sustainability Services

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Nationally recognized certification in health & safety
  • Completion or substantial work toward Master’s Degree in Industrial Hygiene or Environmental Health and Safety

Preferred Education:

  • PhD in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics)

Required Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years' increasingly responsible managerial level experience with environmental and occupational health and safety
  • Experience working in multicultural settings and international regulations
  • Must include detailed knowledge of safety, health, and environmental principles, as well as regulatory requirements in the UAE
  • Must have experience managing University EHS program
  • Ability to train and direct emergency responses
  • Membership in an EHS association (NFPA, ASSP, CSHEMA, NSC, IOSH, NAEM, NASP, and other local and international professional affiliation groups)
