Position Description

Harvard Divinity School invites applications for an instructor, or lecturer, for one course on a part-time adjunct academic appointment during the fall semester 2019 (August 1, 2019 to January 31, 2020). The exact title of the appointment will depend upon the academic qualifications of the finalist. Candidates should be practitioners and ideally have pastoral as well as previous teaching experience.

The holder of this position will teach a course entitled “Spiritual Care from a Muslim Perspective” at the Harvard Divinity School. This course will introduce students to practices of spiritual care in Muslim communities. It will survey different spiritual care practices embedded in different Muslim cultures, focusing on the relevant application of practices in North America with a special emphasis on contemporary issues. The course will be aimed at students who might serve as Muslim chaplains or have pastoral care responsibilities in Muslim communities. The course will make use of meditative, philosophical, counseling, and psychological practices that have relevance and meaning in personal journeys of Muslim spiritual experience.. The course should also be useful to students from different religious traditions and backgrounds who are interested in personal and professional spiritual care, chaplaincy, pastoral care, and counseling .

An advanced degree in Theological/or Religious Studies is required. Candidates should demonstrate experience and excellence in teaching. Previous publications in the area of the appointment are desirable, though not required.

Applicants should demonstrate the following qualifications:

  1. completed advanced degree and/or previous pastoral experience,
  2. prior experience teaching at the graduate level, and
  3. sensibility to a multi-religious, diverse student body. Publications in the field are desirable, though not required.
