Technical Research Assistant - QMUL18929
Department: School of Physics & Astronomy
Salary: £33,615-£37,411 (Grade 4)
Reference: QMUL18929
Location: Mile End
Date posted: 29-May-2019
Closing date: 27-Jun-2019

Overview:
The Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) Particle Physics Research Centre (PPRC) has a vacancy for a Technical Research Assistant to work on technical aspects of the ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk) construction. The ITk is a large silicon detector under design, to be constructed as a replacement of the Inner Detector system for the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The goal of this post is to contribute to the construction of the ITk so that the upgraded ATLAS experiment at the HL-LHC can continue to search for signs of new physics and perform precision measurements of particles, including the Higgs boson.

The QMUL group has a long track record in working on silicon detectors for particle physics applications, including OPAL and the current ATLAS detector. Our important commitments to the design and construction of the ITk will feed into commissioning and operational commitments once the HL-LHC is installed. The successful applicant will be expected to make significant personal contributions to the ITk programme as well as sharing responsibilities in aspects of ITk strip sensor testing and QA/QC of local support structures. The successful applicant will be heavily involved in the ITk construction.

Applicants should have, or be about to gain, a PhD in experimental particle physics or similar field and are expected to have experience from at least two years of active participation in test-beam, detector operations or construction work for a particle or nuclear physics experiment. Strong hardware skills are essential and good knowledge of C++, Python or LabView is desirable. The post will be located at QMUL’s Mile End Campus in London but will require travel to CERN and other locations in the UK during the ITk construction period. The candidate is expected to work in various laboratories and workshops, and adhere to relevant health and safety regulations at all times.

The post is full time, available as soon as possible. It is funded for 3 ½ years by the STFC ATLAS Upgrade project grant with the potential for extension beyond this date for commissioning of the ITk. Starting salary will be in the range £33,615- £37,411 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days’ annual leave, a pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Additional Information
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

General enquiries about the PPRC and informal enquiries about this post should be addressed to the PPRC/ATLAS ITk Group Leader, Dr Adrian Bevan at a.j.bevan@qmul.ac.uk, stating the position code ITk-Tech.

Enquiries on the application procedures can be addressed to Ms. J. Vaca Ortiz j.vaca-ortiz@qmul.ac.uk.

The closing date for applications is 27 June 2019.

Valuing Diversity & Committed to Equality
