You will join:
- The Experimental Physics (EP) Department, which carries out research in the field of experimental particle physics supporting several experiments at the large hadron collider (LHC) at CERN.
- The Detector Technologies (DT) Group which participates in the development, construction and operation of particle detectors for experiments at CERN. This comprises detector consolidation and upgrade projects as well as infrastructure for experiments.
- The Fluidic System Section is charged to design, construct, operate and maintain fluidic systems (gas and cooling) for detectors in CERN experiments. It has also the mandate to perform R&D in areas relevant to novel detector thermal management, gas systems and for the upgrade of the existing systems in view of higher detector performances and sustainable operation.
As Detector Cooling Controls Engineer, you will participate in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of CO2 cooling systems for the LHC experiments. In particular, you will:
- Take a leading role in the preparation of the cooling system functional analysis, supporting the process engineers in the optimization of the process.
- Design of new electrical and control systems for CO2 cooling plants.
- Coordinate the construction and commissioning, taking full responsibility of control system operation and performance.
- Take responsibility for the programming, operation and maintenance of PLC and SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) control systems of the CO2 cooling systems for the LHC experiments.
- Participate in the operation and maintenance activities for the CO2 cooling systems of the CERN LHC experiments.
Master's degree, or equivalent relevant experience in the field of process control, automation engineering, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in designing, building, commissioning and operating electrical and PLC based control systems for non-industrial cooling systems with field experience on both PLC and SCADA systems.
- Proven experience in drafting and updating the necessary documentation for complex control systems: user requirements, functional analysis, electrical schematics, quality assurance documents, software versioning, etc.
- Experience in design and assembly of electrical and control systems for detector cooling, including process optimization.
- Experience in operation and maintenance of CO2 cooling systems would be an asset.
- Functional analysis of control systems.
- Knowledge and application of automation and control theory.
- Design, construction, operation and maintenance of detector cooling systems.
- Configuration and implementation of non-industrial data-acquisition, monitoring and control systems- including PLC, SCADA and Fieldbus systems.
- Installation, operation and maintenance of non-industrial data-acquisition, monitoring and control systems, in particular for cooling systems.
- Working in teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
- Solving problems: being open to original ideas and creative options by which to address issues; continually driving change by seeking new ways to improve outcomes.
- Achieving results: delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations.

- Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations at least in English.

- Interventions in underground installations.
- A valid driving licence is required.
- Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
