The University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy invites applications from candidates with extensive experience in diplomacy or closely related aspects of foreign policy or international affairs for a position of Professor of Practice in International Diplomacy.

  • We welcome applications from candidates with expertise in areas including but not limited to international security; trade, finance and development; human rights; the environment; or specific countries or regions.
  • Successful candidates must demonstrate professional excellence and leadership in diplomacy or a closely related field, normally through distinguished service in senior-level positions over an extended period of time.
  • Successful candidates also must exhibit a commitment to public policy education as a means to develop leaders in international affairs and the interest and ability to teach policy students, mentor and advise them on professional issues, and engage with academic researchers effectively.
  • The Professor of Practice will participate actively in the governance of the Ford School, including through service on relevant faculty committees.
  • A graduate degree in a field related to international affairs is preferred, and a minimum of 10 years of experience in diplomacy or closely related fields is required.
  • This position will entail an initial three-year appointment, renewable for one or more five-year terms, beginning in fall 2019 or winter 2020 . We will give first consideration to applications received by July 15, 2019 but will consider applications until the position is filled.
