PhD Position in 3d Point Clouds Processing

Employer
NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY - NTNU
Location
Trondheim, Norway
Closing date
18 Jun 2019

About the position

We have a vacancy for a PhD candidate at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in 3D Point Clouds Processing.

The PhD candidate will be integrated in the research project Lamdaroad funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The task is to generate high resolution 3D models along highways in the test field of the project by using point clouds data. For this purpose, algorithms will be developed for the high accurate registration of the existing point cloud data at Staten Vegvesen with the new data acquired from UAV and mobile laser scanning. The resulted high resolution 3D models of the road environment should be merged with the 5m resolution DTM that can be downloaded from Geonorge (national website for map data and other location information in Norway). The PhD student needs to develop techniques for the fusion process with full consideration of the difference of scales and geometric characteristics of 3D road models and DTM. The product will be used for simulation of signal propagation and coverage of G5 along roads.

The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to work closely with both SINTEF and NPRA to develop a deep insight about digital infrastructure for autonomous driving.
