Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The Department of Animal Science is the largest academic program in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and provides instruction to over 800 undergraduate students, 80 agricultural institute students, and 90 graduate students. The Department is also a leader in Extension and engagement programs to farmers, allied industry and the public, and conducts internationally recognized research into the nutrition, genetics, reproduction, health and management of domesticated animals.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Animal Science at North Carolina State University is pleased to announce recruitment for a tenure-track faculty position in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the rank of Assistant Professor & Extension Specialist with formal appointments in Academic Teaching (70%) and Extension (30%).

This faculty position will be expected to teach and conduct Extension and applied research programs with a primary focus on sheep and meat goat (small ruminants) production. This position will teach Small Ruminant Management (ANS 408) with lab sections in both fall and spring semesters. This position will also develop and teach a new Small Ruminant Production course with lab sections for the Agricultural Institute (Associate of Applied Science degree program) in spring semesters. Advising undergraduates and mentoring graduate students is expected.

As an Assistant Professor & Extension Specialist, this position will serve as the Faculty Liaison for the Small Ruminant Educational Unit which maintains both sheep and goats for teaching, research and Extension programs. This position will be responsible for developing a comprehensive extension and applied research program in Small Ruminant management. Key responsibilities include conducting applied studies and demonstrations on commercial farms and working with extension field faculty and other extension specialists in support of their education and research programs. Peer-reviewed publications documenting accomplishments will be expected.

Other Work/Responsibilities

This position will be part of a team of animal scientists that is expected to enhance the Department and College’s overall teaching, extension, and research programs. Collaboration with others across the department and university as well as animal industries is expected. In addition, the successful candidate will provide service to the department, college, university and the profession of animal science.

Minimum Education/Experience

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate degree is required.

ABD Candidates who are very close to completion of their PhD, and will complete all requirements of their PhD prior to the anticipated start date for this position, will be considered.

Departmental Required Skills

Possess extensive knowledge of small ruminant production systems with demonstrated expertise in management.

Must demonstrate the ability to clearly and effectively communicate with students, faculty, and staff as well as stakeholders and general audiences.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

The successful candidate should have a degree in Animal Science or an appropriate discipline and strong and demonstrated interest in sheep and or goats.

Preference will be given to candidates with a willingness to collaborate with the animal industry and documented success in teaching and in cooperative extension programs.

Required License or Certification

While driving a vehicle is not an essential function of this position, we believe it is necessary to have a valid NC driver’s license to perform the essential functions of the job. This position will need to travel off-site on occasion, alone and must independently be able to travel from location to location without reliance on others or the advanced notice that is often required of alternative means of transportation. Due to limitations in funding, the College cannot afford the high costs that would be required in attaining the services of transportation services such as taxis or car services.
