An exciting opportunity for a Robotic and Automation Systems Engineer has become available to work full time on a 24 month Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Helia Photonics Ltd.  In this state-of-the art project, you will lead the full development and automation of a robotics workcell applied to micro-manipulation of semiconductor chips at the company’s facility located in Livingston.  This includes the design and assembly of a high performance robotic manipulator and chip gripper, development of vision control to achieve high precision micromanipulation, and programming and integration of the complete workcell.

As project lead, this is a unique opportunity to develop a novel, cutting-edge mechatronic system from the ground up, gaining wide-ranging technical experience and delivering real business impact. You will be fully supported by senior company management and by a team of academics at UWS.

The successful candidate must possess:

A relevant background in an applied science/engineering subject with minimum of MSc Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering with Control or Automation.  Candidates without MSc but possessing significant research and development experience in mechatronics design and automation are also encouraged to apply.

Essential skills and knowledge required include :

• Knowledge of robot design
• Solid knowledge in control system design;
• Vision based sensor systems knowledge and experience;
• Proven proficiency and experience in at least one high-level computer programming language such as Visual Basic (preferred) or C/C++.
• Knowledge of Maple.
• Excellent technical writing, preparation, and reporting
• Strong experimental background;
• Prove capacity to teamwork and integrate in multidisciplinary environment

Knowledge and/or experience is required in some of the following areas:

Experience in robotics or mechatronics design and construction, microcontrollers and electronics, robotic control and programming for trajectory planning and precision manipulation, vision control and automation, prototyping and experimental testing & refinement including industrial and design office related experience.

Project management experience ideally within industrial environment will be considered. Experience with semiconductor / microchips handling within a cleanroom environment or experience with micro-manipulation or micro-engineering would be a significant advantage.
