Lecturer in Data Science – Permanent

Our School of Computing is home to 70 academics, 1400 students and holds professional accreditation from the British Computer Society with some of the most impressive computing lab facilities in the UK. 

The role
This exciting new role arises from the UK and Scottish Government’s substantial investment in Edinburgh and the South East of Scotland Data Driven Innovation City Deal. The role-holder would lead the development of a new on-campus BSc (Hons) in Data Science), working with local universities and colleges to ensure curriculum alignment. 

As a Lecturer in Data Science you will enhance our research and enterprise capability, lead Database Systems teaching. You will contribute to the MSc in Data Science and support with the launch of a new MSc in Data Engineering and our Graduate Apprenticeship scheme.  In addition, you will teach in areas such as Data Analytics, Data Wrangling, Mathematics for Data Science, Machine Learning, A.I. and Simulation and Modelling.

A developing track record in research publications and income generation is essential. Our research is inter-disciplined and you will have the opportunity to work within multiple thriving research groups. You may work on a range of topics including natural language, machine-learning, data-cleaning, statistical modelling and simulation. 

Who we are looking for
As a lecturer, you will work within a vibrant research and teaching group, where you will initially have 30% of your time dedicated to building research. There is support for travel to conferences, purchasing equipment and developing your network. We offer a range of development including our Research and Innovation Office who support grant funding applications. Lastly, you will be mentored by a Professor and we aim to have you quickly join a PhD student supervisory team.

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • PhD in a relevant discipline.  
  • Evidence of a professional academic and research profile 
  • Continuous professional/academic development
  • High quality teaching/learning and research programmes in Data Science 
  • Evidence of research led teaching
  • A willingness to deliver teaching internationally, nationally (UK) and online
