Professor/Associate Professor in Law

Challenging, interesting and constantly changing, the University of Derby is an extraordinary place to learn and an incredibly rewarding place to work.
Ours is an extraordinary educational environment and because we specialise in identifying and developing individual potential, you can be confident you'll receive all the help and encouragement you need to build a rewarding career with lots of opportunities to progress.

Our combined higher and further education offering is spread over campuses in Derby, Buxton, Leek and Chesterfield and we have some of the best university facilities in the UK, investing more than £200 million in facilities in the last 10 years. We are now among the top 20 universities in the UK for teaching quality and have risen six places overall in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide league table to joint 13th in the country for teaching quality; an excellent achievement and a reflection of our Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) Gold Award. We are ranked as one of the UK’s top 30 universities in The Guardian’s University Guide for 2019 and among the world’s top 250 modern universities in the Times Higher Education Young University rankings, and we were recently presented with the Teaching and Learning Strategy of the Year Award at the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards (THELMAs).

We remain in the top 10 universities for the highest number of Knowledge Transfer Partnerships being delivered. Our research is wide-ranging and internationally recognised, and our research teams are working on projects that are:

  • helping businesses become more efficient and sustainable;
  • improving the lives of young people;
  • predicting and reducing climate change;
  • helping to conserve our local heritage and environment;
  • developing new technologies, such as artificial intelligence;
  • supporting the transformation of health and social care services;
  • making a significant contribution to national and international policy agendas.

The Role
The School of Law and Social Sciences is seeking to make an appointment to a Professorial role in support of key research strategic considerations within the area of Law.

Law at Derby sits within the School of Law and Social Sciences which is part of the College of Business, Law and Social Sciences, and is a growing aspect of our provision at UG and PG levels. Law has existing strengths in a range of areas including medical law, employment law, human rights and commercial law. Law is also closely integrated with our policing and criminology provision with some shared provision and research interests. Our curriculum embeds and builds on UoD’s key strengths in real-world education, student support and co-production of knowledge with students at all levels.

The Law School has excellent links with practice and has recently strengthened its commitment to clinical legal education through the launch of the Student Legal Advice Centre.

We are looking to augment and extend our specialisms through enhancing our research leadership in law. We are looking for candidates who can build on our demonstrative commitment to student success and research impact and who can offer specialisms in one or more of the following:

  • Private Law with an interest in Employment Law
  • Commercial Law
  • Criminal Law
  • Sports Law
  • Public International Law with an interest in Human Rights

The successful candidate would work with our other research professors in the College – particularly Prof. Ken Pease, Prof. Alex Nunn, and Prof. Ray Bull. We have a collegiate, supportive and team-based environment. We encourage inter-disciplinarily and team-based research projects and have recently established considerable infrastructure and support for research, including weekly research seminars, termly mentoring and research planning, and collaborative research projects. Using this infrastructure, we have begun to increase our success in research funding and related activity, and we have resources to support impact activities.

School of Law and Social Sciences
The School of Law, Criminology and Social Sciences offers courses in Policing, Social and Political Sciences, Law, Criminal Psychology and Criminology, which is ranked Top 20 in the Guardian League Table 2018. Our Policing team have secured the first Policing Apprenticeships to be awarded in the country. A common thread across all subjects taught within the School is a commitment to social justice and the School seeks to be a catalyst for positive change. Our Law degrees help students to develop professional skills in judicial shadowing, pro bono legal work, professional mentoring and mooting and legal skills competitions. The School also operates the Student Legal Advice Centre. Criminology received the national British Society of Criminology Teaching and Excellence Award in 2018 and Sociology achieved 100% overall satisfaction in the NSS 2018.
