No. of vacancies - Category:

One (1) position of Young Researcher (PostDoctoral level)
Two (2) positions of Young Researchers (Master/PhD Level)

The University of Cyprus invites applications for three (3) research positions, for full or part time employment, to be filled immediately, in the Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory (EFM Lab) of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the School of Engineering.

*For UCY internal use, the above-mentioned positions are referred to as “Special Research Scientists”.

The Environmental Fluid Mechanics Laboratory

The Environmental Fluid Mechanics (EFM) Laboratory in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, of the School of Engineering at the University of Cyprus continues its successes in attracting competitive research funding and in forging collaborations with research stakeholders. Following an open research call, the EFM lab has recently won the research program under the Call for "EXCELLENCE ISLES", entitled "Urban Microclimate and the Design of a Sustainable Built Environment". The project investigates the mitigation and adaptation actions under climate change in the urban built environment. In this project which is coordinated by the EFM Lab of the University of Cyprus, a number of local academic partners (the Cyprus Institute and the Cyprus University of Technology) as well as world-renowned international institutes (ETH-Zurich, Switzerland and the University of Cambridge in the UK) are participating as collaborating partners. In addition, the EFM lab, upon invitation, soon begins a collaboration with the Department of Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment of Cyprus for related issues on climate change. At the same time, EFM lab participates in the European research program Life + MEDEA for the investigation of desert dust storms, the transboundary transport of particulate matter and its effect on human health. In the light of these activities and context, the EFM lab invites perspective interested researchers (at postdoctoral, doctoral and pre-doctoral levels) with high research motivation, to express interest and to submit an application. The terms of employment in the research programs depend on the experience, expertise and the availability of time commitment (full or part time).

The EFM lab, provides an inspiring environment for carrying out cutting-edge research in the area of multi-scale fluid dynamics with particular emphasis in environmental fluid dynamics. The lab has an international outlook and visibility and as such it hosts every year a number of visiting researchers and collaborators from across the world. Above all the lab strives for gender equality and diversity.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants for these Young Researcher positions should have a degree in Engineering, or Physics, or Mathematics or in similar field, with a background in Fluid Mechanics. Experience in the fields of Computational Fluid Dynamics, Air Quality Monitoring and/or Particle Image Velocimetry or broadly Environmental Fluid Mechanics will be considered particularly advantageous.

The successful postdoctoral candidate must hold a PhD in Environmental Fluid Dynamics or relevant field from a recognized University. Advanced experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics and/or experimental fluid mechanics, either in the field experiments or in the laboratory or both, will be considered particularly advantageous. Prior teaching experience in fundamental undergraduate and postgraduate fluid mechanics courses (experimental and/or computational) will also be considered as an additional qualification for the postdoctoral position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidates will have the opportunity to conduct fundamental or applied research in the area of Computational Fluid Dynamics with applications in the urban built environment, Uncertainty Analysis, complemented by Laboratory experiments and Field Measurement Activities.

The post-doctoral researcher shall also provide some project management support to the needs of the research programs of the Lab, including report writing as well as project meeting organization. The post-doctoral researcher is expected through their enthusiasm, creativity and team-work spirit to attract, initiate and expand the current activities using the advanced experimental infrastructure of the lab. Also, they should be able to help in the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students in undertaking experimental work in the lab, including training and monitoring progress. They should be able to give seminars and talks both of academic and popular nature in order to attract researchers in the field.

EMPLOYMENT TERMS

The positions are on a contract basis. The position for a postdoctoral researcher is on a full-time contract basis of 36 months. The gross monthly salary will start from €2450 and will depend on experience and qualifications.

The gross monthly salary of the young researchers’ position will start from €1050 on a full-time contract of 36 months depending on expertise and experience; part-time position will depend on the time availability and commitment and will scale accordingly with the full-time salary. Ideally, the positions of Young Researchers should be combined with an application for a PhD at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (EFM lab) and the research work that will be carried out will form the subject of the doctoral thesis. Most graduate courses in the Department run in Greek, however it is possible some courses to be taken in English. It is possible for perspective PhD candidates who already hold a Masters degree in relevant field to have some of the courses recognized towards their PhD requirements.

The contracts are subject to progress-review on a yearly basis for renewal confirmation based on satisfactory performance. For all positions, the 13th salary bonus is incorporated in the monthly salary. The lab may contribute up to €500 in order to cover a relocation cost if the successful candidate needs to relocate from another country, depending on the country of origin of the researcher. The lab can further provide some yearly support for their dissemination research activities (such as attending conferences etc). The positions do not include medical insurance coverage, however the University of Cyprus provides the opportunity, if the employee desires so, to become a member at the State's healthcare plan (annual cost per person €550). According to the law, as of 01/06/2019 the employee will have the right to outpatient medical coverage (GHS). Thus, the Employee shall contribute as of their date of employment 1,7% of their monthly gross earnings. As of 01/03/2020, this percentage shall increase to 2.65%. Additionally, the Employee may join the Private Medical Scheme for an additional cost of 4,95% of their monthly gross salary (provided that the total working time is over 18 hours per week) and the employment contract is (at least) on an annual base.

APPLICATION SUBMISSION

The applicants need to submit the following via email in PDF format to neophytou@ucy.ac.cy by Monday 8th April 2019:

  1. Letter of Motivation, Research Interest and Future plans
  2. Detailed Curriculum Vitae
  3. List of Publications
  4. Copies of academic degrees and transcripts
  5. The names and contact details of 2 persons who have agreed to provide academic references.

The applicants should also indicate their availability for an interview as well as for their earliest possible employment start date in case of their recruitment.
