Role Description

The Enhanced Composites and Structures Centre is an established partner to manufacturers and members of their supply chains through research, consultancy and short courses. The Centre has established a leading reputation specialising in polymer composites manufacturing, process simulation, monitoring and optimisation, thermosetting cure modelling and hybrid composite-metallic joining techniques. The Centre includes the Cranfield Composites Manufacturing Laboratory, which focuses on the investigation and development of novel processing technology for lightweight structures. The facilities of the Centre include a full thermal and thermomechanical analysis suite.

The Centre is looking for a Research Fellow or Research Assistant who will carry out research on the simulation and monitoring of composites processing. The work involves the development of efficient models of process distortion, the implementation of sensors operating in real time during processing and the integration of these technologies in a scheme allowing optimisation and control of manufacturing of composites. This role is sponsored by the FLEX CleanSky2 project and the DiSenC pull through project. The post holder will work closely with project partners from TWI, SAAB, Loiretech, the National Composites Centre and Advise-DETA, present the outcomes of their research in project meetings and prepare deliverable reports and journal publications.

The successful candidate will have an MSc/Degree in Mechanical , Aeronautics or Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or similar field (for Research Assistant) or a PhD (for Research Fellow) in Materials, Manufacturing, Composites or similar field and experience of working with simulation, developing/implementing numerical analysis codes and carrying out experimental testing and analysing the corresponding datasets (or equivalent).
