Permanent, Full time
Ref: R4287

At a time of exciting developments in the School of Art, Design and Architecture and the University of Huddersfield, a highly creative and enthusiastic individual is required for the post of Professor/Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning. The Associate Dean will maintain an active research profile securing high quality outputs appropriate to the subject and build a record of academic distinction through publication, exhibition etc, and through contribution to major conferences and media events. The School has achieved recognition for its merging of traditional technologies with new and digital technology and aims to maintain this reputation. The successful candidate will report to the Dean of School Professor Mike Kagioglou and have line management responsibility experience and a track record in leadership position in their subject area.  A strong focus on teaching and learning, innovation, research and aspirations for global significance are essential.

The School currently offers an exciting mix of the Art, Design, Fashion & Textiles, Architecture and Build Environment courses. The School is committed to promoting high quality research, teaching and learning, which reflects contemporary knowledge and understanding related to studio practice, theoretical contexts and industry. Our students participate in placement opportunities with a wide range of organisations, from global conglomerates, to small independent based businesses. This enriches the students’ experience and empowers them with a professional approach, enabling them to achieve their career ambitions.

The Associate Dean will maintain a personal research profile of international quality and reputation that has a significant impact on the School of Art, Design and Architecture and beyond to enhance the reputation and standing of both the School and University.

Our School of global significance where research and teaching excellence meet creative practice is award winning, professionally accredited and research intensive. Over the last year we have made an impact on a global scale through our research, collaborative projects and with international award winning staff and students.

At the University of Huddersfield, we have a lot to be proud of. In 2016, the University was ranked as the first in England for professionally qualified teaching staff. In 2017, the University won the first Global Teaching Excellence Award, recognising the University’s commitment to world-class teaching and its success in developing students as independent learners and critical thinkers (Higher Education Academy). We are proud to have been recognised as a gold-rated University by the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) in 2018.

The University invested in the Barbara Hepworth Building, which will become the new home for the School of Art, Design and Architecture, due to open in September 2019. The £30m investment embodies all that is current, contemporary and creative, offering huge potential to act as a catalyst for future connectivity, setting the scene for collaboration and learning.

Named after the famous West Yorkshire born sculptor and designed for experimentation, the building will provide staff and students the opportunity to develop, curate and exhibit their work in innovative spaces, utilising fully extensive and world-leading workshop facilities, both physical and digital.
Art, Design and Architecture, a School of Global Significance, incorporates the Departments of Architecture and 3D Design; Art and Communication; and Fashion and Textiles. The School is investing in the development of new areas of activity to broaden its current portfolio and research.

At this exciting time the position will play a critical role in shaping and developing our provision in the future whilst ensuring our global significance and impact is realised through excellence in all that we do.
