An exceptional opportunity for a Mechanical/Composites Design & Development Engineer to work with an award-winning designer has become available to work full-time on a 24-month Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). The aim of the project is to embed mechanical and composites design/analysis engineering expertise, to facilitate the design, development, testing and launch of the World’s first intelligent wheelchair aimed at active/independent users. At the core of the design is intelligent centre of gravity monitoring/adjustment.
To offset the weight of added functionality the wheelchair will be made from advanced composite materials. The associate’s role with Phoenix Instinct is the design and analysis of the composite monocoque/wheels in order to achieve one of the lightest wheelchairs ever produced.
Phoenix Instinct, with the Phoenix Ai wheelchair, are one of five finalist worldwide competitors, for the $1M Toyota Unlimited Mobility Challenge. The winners will be announced at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

The successful candidate must possess:
- Educated to a minimum of MEng or MSc in Mechanical Engineering or BEng with related experience.
Application requirements:
Knowledge and/or experience is required in the following:
- Experienced in mechanical design including product design and development, composite structures design and finite element analysis, project management, 3D modelling and experimental testing of mechanical designs.
Essential skills we require as a minimum:
- Detailed mechanical and product design knowledge and understanding.
- Proven composite structures design and analysis expertise.
- Skilled in computer analytical techniques for design of composite structures.
- Understanding of experimental design, design for manufacture, product selection and testing.
- Well-developed project management and research organisational skills
- Skilled in the use of 3D CAD modelling.
