Role Description

Cranfield University is an exclusively postgraduate institution and a global leader for education and transformational research in technology and management. It is one of the top five research-intensive universities in the UK and has an unrivalled reputation for transforming cutting-edge technology, management and science into practical, life-enhancing solutions. We are also in the top 50 in the world for Engineering - Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing (QS world rankings 2018). In the last UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) over 80% of the research carried out by Cranfield University was assessed to be either world or internationally leading, indicating the quality and impact of the work carried out at Cranfield University.

The School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing (SATM) is a leading provider of postgraduate level engineering education, research and technology support. At the forefront of aerospace technology for over 60 years, we deliver multi-disciplinary solutions to the complex challenges facing the aviation industry.

As Research Fellow you will focus on the development of novel technologies for implementation in aircraft cockpit operations to assist pilots. You will be integrating novel cognitive computing methods into the engineering flight simulation facilities at Cranfield. This will require you to develop software that will allow the integration of new sensors in the flight simulators and also, develop and execute test scenarios with line pilots. This role is sponsored by the E-Pilots CleanSky2 project.

You will be educated to a doctoral level (or equivalent) and will be able to carry out independent research as well as collaborative research with multiple partner institutions. It is essential that you have a PhD (or close to completion) in either aerospace engineering or in the field of cognitive computing or equivalent. A strong track record in software development, either focusing on modelling and simulation of complex systems (such as aircraft) or in cognitive computing is essential. Interest in aviation and/or aircraft operations is highly desirable.
