Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences
The University of Leeds is one of the UK’s largest, most prestigious and diverse research-intensive universities. We are a member of the Russell Group, ranked in the world’s top 100 universities in the QS rankings, and named University of the Year by the Times and Sunday Times in 2017. With an annual turnover of £715 million, more than 38,000 students and 8,600 staff, we are continuing to make significant investments in student education, research and innovation, and extending our international reach. The campus is also being transformed to meet the needs and aspirations of our growing community of students and staff.
The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences is an exciting new faculty, bringing together the University’s considerable strengths across engineering, mathematics and physical sciences to enable greater integration of fundamental science and mathematical modelling with the development of processes, devices and technologies that can address challenges of national and global importance. With strong academic links to the Alan Turing, Rosalind Franklin and Royce Institutes and many industrial partners, and with significant financial investment in the newly created faculty, including the development of the Sir William Henry Bragg building, the Faculty is poised to take advantage of significant opportunities, to pursue world-leading innovation across our research and education activities and to deliver academic excellence. This will include the state-of-the-art Bragg Centre for Materials Research.
Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, and a member of the University Executive Group, the Executive Dean will play an important role in the leadership of the University, contributing to the setting of strategic direction and delivering associated plans. Within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and in addition to the initial set up of the new faculty infrastructure, the Executive Dean will lead the delivery of an exceptional student experience, excellent research, innovation and impact and meaningful partnerships, nationally and internationally.
Alongside an excellent and highly credible academic track record across research and education, the successful candidate will bring significant experience of senior leadership at an appropriate scale. With operational management experience and sound financial acumen, candidates will need to offer a contemporary and ambitious vision for the advancement of science and engineering. Candidates should evidence an ability to inspire and lead the design and implementation of a Faculty strategy that reflects the University’s strategic ambitions, developed in collaboration with colleagues, students and industry partners. The Executive Dean will be expected to raise the profile of the Faculty and University and therefore it is important that candidates have good interpersonal and communication skills and enjoy engaging with a wide range of stakeholders.
