Interview Date: Thursday 14 March 2019

The National Centre for Food Manufacturing requires a Research Assistant to progress a range of applied research and development (R&D) activities aimed at advancing the development and uptake of robotics & automation for the food manufacturing sector.

A satellite campus of the University of Lincoln, The National Centre for Food Manufacturing is a major resource for the UK’s food industry with over 250 major companies accessing courses, technical services and research.  Our clients include the major national and global food manufacturing businesses and leading supermarkets and we collaborate with many international partners and universities. The NCFM has outstanding sector-focused facilities, including a state-of-the-art food factory demonstrating cutting edge food automation.

The Food Manufacturing sector is facing a perfect storm including labour shortages, the rising National Living Wage and cost of inputs across ingredients and energy and utilities, along with increasing consumer and retailer pressures for service, quality, quantity and price. To unlock further operating margins and capacity, a priority R&D area for the sector over the next 15 years will be Automation & Robotics. The post holder will work extensively with academics, technology providers, food manufacturers and other stakeholders to support the industry in realising the potential of automation and building opportunities for NCFM in parallel.

This initiative forms part of the NCFM’s applied research and innovation agenda. This approach benefits from significant industry partnership and interdisciplinary research supported through collaboration with Schools both within the College of Science and across the University, along with academic partnerships with leading national and international institutions for the food manufacturing sector and engagement with stakeholders across funding and policy agendas.

The post holder will have a strong background in Robotics & Automation Systems (RAS) and must demonstrate an ability to design innovative solutions by integrating a range of off-the-shelf technologies and products with newly designed mechatronic systems. This post offers an outstanding opportunity for a committed researcher to work within a dynamic, industry facing university environment and gain valuable experience in partnering in research with businesses, some of whom are at the cutting edge of technological innovation for the food sector.

The post is one of several posts being established to secure the success of the Greater Lincolnshire Agri-food Innovation Platform (GLAFIP) project. GLAFIP will stimulate Agri-food technological innovations and provide underpinning support for the technical, economic and environmental performance of Greater Lincolnshire’s largest industry. Led by the University of Lincoln and supported by funding from the European Regional Development Agency, the project will deliver applied research, innovation, knowledge and demonstration activities with SME businesses.

The post holder will be based at Holbeach Campus but will need to work flexibly to deliver the projects outputs which will involve travelling to the premises of businesses and the University’s Lincoln campuses.

Please note that this post requires an Enhanced DBS check
