Role Description

Cranfield University is an exclusively postgraduate institution and a global leader for education and transformational research in technology and management. It is one of the top five research-intensive universities in the UK and has an unrivalled reputation for transforming cutting-edge technology, management and science into practical, life-enhancing solutions. We are also in the top 50 in the world for Engineering - Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing (QS world rankings 2018).

In the last UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) over 80% of the research carried out by Cranfield University was assessed to be either world or internationally leading, indicating the quality and impact of the work carried out at Cranfield University. The School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing (SATM) is a leading provider of postgraduate level engineering education, research and technology support. At the forefront of aerospace technology for over 60 years, we deliver multi-disciplinary solutions to the complex challenges facing the aviation industry.

The Propulsion Engineering Centre enjoys global visibility and extensive links with industry. The Centre is looking to expand its internationally renowned activities by the recruitment of two full-time Research Fellows. The purpose of these posts is to deliver research in the area of propulsion systems aerodynamic integration. The research is primarily in collaboration with Rolls Royce.

The research will mainly focus on the development and delivery of aerodynamic tools and software for the analysis and optimisation of aero-engine intakes, nacelles and nozzles. Of particular interest is the development of methods for the preliminary assessment of aerodynamic performance including drag and aero-engine installation effects. The role will require close interaction with other researchers and the industrial partners to ensure the successful transfer of technology.

Experience in computational fluid dynamics and engineering computer programming is required and experience of aero-engine aerodynamics, software development and flow field analysis would be beneficial. Knowledge of intake, nacelle or nozzle aerodynamics would also be beneficial.

The project is a collaborative programme and therefore an important trait will be the ability to direct the research so as to satisfy the industrial requirements. In addition, the research position sits within the Gas Turbine Technology Group and it is expected that the research fellow will integrate within the group and the surrounding research and teaching activities.

You will have a PhD in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering (or near to completion) and ideally with aerodynamics experience. You will also have recent experience of computational fluid dynamics, ideally in the aerospace field. Good skills in engineering computing and programming are also required and experience of optimisation methods would be beneficial. A demonstrated ability to write high quality journal papers and reports is also essential.

For an informal discussion, please contact Professor David MacManus, Professor of Propulsion Aerodynamics & Installations, on (T); +44 (0)1234 754735 or (E); d.g.macmanus@cranfield.ac.uk
