Role Description

Here at Cranfield, we can offer you the opportunity and resources to really develop your career. Cranfield is an exclusively postgraduate university that is a global leader for education and transformational research in technology and management.

The School of Water, Energy and Environment is committed to leading in its areas of expertise through investing in world class staff and facilities over the long term.

With experience in agricultural systems modelling, you will develop and implement a farmer friendly irrigation scheduling tool making use of Earth Observation (EO) data, soils information and agro climate sensor network data. You will work closely with Cranfield academic staff with international track records in Agricultural Water Management, Soil Science and Plant Science and you will liaise with UK businesses commercialising EO data services and in situ sensing platforms. You will validate scheduling tools in the context of a large cooperative of smallholder banana growers in Colombia within an existing IT framework.

You will have a PhD (or close to completion) in a topic related to crop modelling, or equivalent, and be able to demonstrate an excellent understanding of agricultural systems and agro-hydrological processes. Ideally you will have experience of project management, of conducting field work overseas and be enthusiastic about changing the lives of smallholder farmers through delivery of knowledge exchange. To make rapid progress, fluency in Spanish is highly desirable.

For an informal discussion, please contact Andrew Thompson, Professor of Molecular Plant Sciences & Head of Centre-CSAFI, on +44 (0)1234 750111 Ext. 2423 or (E); a.j.thompson@cranfield.ac.uk or Jerry Knox, Professor of Agricultural Water Management, on +44 1234 75 8365 or (E);  j.knox@cranfield.ac.uk

We actively consider flexible working options such as part-time, compressed or flexible hours and/or an element of homeworking, and commit to exploring the possibilities for each role.

Your career at Cranfield will be enhanced through access to fully equipped shared laboratory and pilot facilities, extensive research and business training through our learning and development team and doctoral training centres in a collegiate and supportive environment.
