Beijing Normal University (BNU) is dedicated to building "a world-class comprehensive, research-oriented normal university with Chinese characteristics" while pursuing a talent program aimed to boost discipline development. 

BNU, founded in 1902 as the Normal College of the Imperial University of Peking, is one of the key universities under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of China, and is a renowned university best known for teacher education, education science, and the basic disciplines of the humanities and the sciences. It is acknowledged as one of the first group of universities listed in China’s first “211 Project” and “985 Project”. In 2017, BNU was selected into the national Type-A universities of the “World Class University Plan” and 11 disciplines were included in the “First Class Discipline Plan”. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, BNU ranked sixth in mainland China with its 6 disciplines evaluated as A+ disciplines. Pedagogy, Psychology, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, Drama and Film Studies, and Geography. In the World University Rankings for 2017/18 provided by UK-based Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), BNU ranked 256th in the world and 8th among universities in mainland China.
