Tackling Environmental Resource Management (TERM) Phase Two

Applications are invited from social scientists and/or research groups based at European universities to apply for grants under the second round. Grants are available for the organisation of summer schools, workshops and for exchanges. Organising research groups should comprise researchers from different European countries (minimum four countries). The budget available for the organisation of a summer school is E30,000. For a workshop the available budget is E15,000-E22,500. The duration of the grants will be 12 months. Priority themes: the comparative dynamics of consumption and production processes; environmental management and policy instruments under uncertainty; forms of international environmental cooperation and their development; perception, communication and the social representation of environmental change. Partnerships Programme

The partnerships programme is intended to promote academic collaboration between university departments in Britain and Turkey and contribute towards the development of Turkey through the enhancement of research and teaching expertise. Partnerships projects are intended to support basic, pre competitive and publishable research. The project should be undertaken by two or more academics on both sides. Applications from young researchers are particularly welcome.

Priority subject areas: science, engineering and technology - life sciences, engineering, chemistry, agriculture, physics, computer science; environment - bio-diversity, energy efficiency, sustainable agriculture, forestry, urban development, integrated coastal management, sustainable tourism environmental education; economics, finance and management - economic liberalisation, private sector development. Grants are to cover two to three short-term exchanges per annum. Biological Mechanisms of

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

The focus of this request for applications is to understand the biological consequence of noise as a primary cause of hearing loss. Research applications are sought in the following areas: the study of cell injury, cell death and cell survival as related to NIHL; investigations of susceptibility to NIHL focusing on genetic or environmental factors; investigations focused on protection and rescue from NIHL. Oceanography

This research announcement requests proposals for scientific investigations and activities contributing to the continuation and enhancement of Nasa's physical, biological and polar oceanography programmes. Nasa is soliciting investigations in the areas of physical and biological oceanography, and in the area of polar oceans and sea ice. Research topics: analysis and interpretation of ocean processes using satellite, aircraft, and in situ data; multi-sensor approach to understanding ocean phenomena, understanding and estimation of air-sea fluxes; providing the scientific basis for next generation ocean remote sensing technologies; temporal and spatial variability of primary productivity and new production in ocean;

identification of phytoplankton taxonomic groups from space or airborne sensors; investigating and evaluating oceanographic links between high latitude climate and lower-latitude climate;

Equipment Grants

Applications for major items of equipment (in excess of Pounds 20,000), which will facilitate multiple projects, will be considered only from units with an established track record of research into the rheumatic diseases. The equipment must be able to make a lasting impact on rheumatological research over a period of many years. Application for the partial cost of a piece of equipment are encouraged. Requests for small items of equipment (costing less than Pounds 20,000) linked to a specific project, programme or fellowship application should be included in the grant application. Equipment grants are awarded three times a year. Materials Processing for

Engineering Applications:

third call for proposals

The EPSRC is seeking research proposals to a major managed programme to support engineering-oriented activity related to the processing of structural materials. The programme addresses key Foresight priorities and is intended to extend the existing portfolio of research in the area through encouragement of interdisciplinary working at the materials/engineering interface. Proposals are welcome in the following research areas: alternative processes enabling the use of sustainable alternatives to materials in current use; processing technologies with reduced impact on the environment and/or processing methodologies which offer reduced energy consumption; incremental improvements to existing processes leading to enhanced properties of structural materials and/or significantly reduced production times and costs; new processes offering radically improved properties of structural materials; modelling and simulation which relate materials composition, structure, and process parameters to end-product performance and design. Second Call for Proposals

The NEAT programme is inviting outline proposals for strategic applied research which utilises recent advances in fundamental knowledge and technology to develop products and interventions for improved health and social care or for disease prevention and treatment. Applications must show innovation and must have relevance, impact and a potential to contribute to future health gain for patients and the general population. It is anticipated that approximately 12 15 projects may be commissioned if the funding levels of the first call are maintained. Outline proposal deadline: July 20.
