David Willetts

October 9, 1998

Shadow education secretary David Willetts acknowledged the personal sacrifices made by higher education staff in the years of poorly funded Conservative-driven expansion.

"I hope to make the point that the shift from one in eight to one in three, which we talk about as a Conservative achievement, also meant a hell of a lot of hard work by the people in higher education," he said in Bournemouth.

The Association of University Teachers welcomed Mr Willetts's comments, pointing out that the unit of resource in the expansion period fell by about 40 per cent.
