UK Academic Salon
19 May 2020

19 May 2020

It was our pleasure to connect university leaders, research champions and industry and government representatives on Tuesday 19 May for the 2020 UK Academic Salon.

The aim of the salon was to ask how the UK can preserve its robust research reputation and output, and what more can be done to bolster strong, longstanding, knowledge-based partnerships. We also explored how academia and industry can best collaborate to foster 5G / AI ecosystems which support fundamental research. And as sectors across the UK work towards solutions to the Covid-19 outbreak, we looked to understand how innovation networks can ensure better health outcomes now and in the future.

What makes a successful innovation district?

Innovation districts are integrated into the urban fabric of many communities and remain a significant driver of economic growth and prosperity. These distinct networks of knowledge-producing organisations are reshaping major parts of the UK, so how can the government prioritise place-based investment in innovation districts to boost productivity, support inclusive growth, and to deliver the Industrial Strategy? And, could innovation districts be the key to unlocking the full potential of the Northern Powerhouse?
