English Literature and British Sign Language

If you wish to study two academic subjects in depth our Joint Honours degree programmes are a great way to do this. At York St John you will be taught by enthusiastic and experienced staff who are active as scholars and researchers in their specialist areas. Taking a language as part of your degree generally commands excellent job prospects and you will become more self-confident and independent, and aware of a wider world where you can operate in another culture and through another language. The acquisition of language skills will enhance all areas of your degree study. Studying English Literature at York St John University is about more than the study of great books. Of course, you will study great books, but you can also take modules in exciting areas such as children’s literature, creative writing, or in popular forms like horror fiction. This course will also cover the study of British Sign Language, its structure, history, grammar and use. This may include the study of the British deaf community and culture and interpretation between English and BSL. Additionally, it may also include the linguistic study of BSL and comparison with other signed and spoken languages.
