Education Studies - York St John University

There is recognition that education is not confined to schools. Learning is to be found in a wide range of settings and institutions, such as the family, communities and the workplace. This idea will permeate your studies. Central to this programme is the examination of the idea that learning can take place in many different locations and many of these will be examined and evaluated. Our course is run by a small team of tutors. This means that you will get to know us well, and we will get to know you well. This is central to both the course and the University, for we are small enough to care, but big enough to widen horizons. If you want to look at an area of human experience that initially seems obvious, but is full of hidden meanings, twists and turns, then this is the course for you. Not only will you gain an insight into how humans learn, but you will also develop your own critical capacities in the process of your own learning. Through the study of education, in its many guises, we will ask questions and seek answers. Our first question might be ‘What is education?’ Think for a second about this. What comes into your head? What does it mean to be educated? What would an educated person look like? Or act like? What does it mean when we say that we have had a good education? The Education Studies programme will help you to discover the answers to these and other questions.
