Languages and Contemporary European Studies (4 years) - University of Southampton

This innovative programme is one of the few European studies courses based in a modern languages programme. It combines many of the attractions of a modern languages degree with a wide range of social and cultural studies. You will study the history and politics of European integration, with a particular focus on political, legal and economic structures and major themes related to society, ideology and culture. In addition, you will study two languages from French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. You will need an A level in one language; the other can be started from scratch. You will normally spend your third year abroad in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal or China. There is also the possibility of spending the year in China or Latin America. Modern languages and linguistics at Southampton is ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of our research (REF 2014). Teaching and learning is supported by three research centres, Transnational Studies, Global Englishes and Applied Language Research. In addition, you will study two languages from French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. You will need an A level in one language; the other can be started from scratch. There is also the possibility of studying a non-European language such as Chinese, Japanese or Arabic as your second language. You will normally spend your third year abroad in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal or China. There is also the possibility of spending the year in China or Latin America.
