Aeronautical Engineering - University of Salford

Aeronautical engineers design, develop and manage civil and military aircraft. Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), our course is a gateway to professional Chartered Engineer status. Aeronautical engineering at Salford combines essential mechanical engineering content with aeronautic specialisms.You’ll follow a structured, three-year programme – or four, if you choose to do the integrated Masters – which combines theory, simulation and real-world aviation practice. Early course content includes electrical systems, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and structures. You’ll progress to look at elements of aircraft design, including aircraft structures, flight systems, navigation, aerodynamics and performance. Learning takes place in our Peel Park campus, minutes from central Manchester, voted the UK’s most liveable city in 2018. You'll gain hands-on experience in our established aeronautical and mechanical facility, featuring a Merlin MP520-T flight simulator and an Elite Flight Training System. You’ll also have the opportunity to complete a flight test course using Cranfield University’s instrumented Jetstream 31 aircraft at its National Flying Laboratory Centre. As a leading regional centre for aeronautics, Salford has strong industry connections. Our 'With Professional Experience' option gives you the opportunity to take a placement year to apply what you’ve learnt and develop further skills, adding ‘with professional experience’ to your final degree award.
