Acoustical and Audio Engineering

Acoustic engineering explores the noise, vibration and audio output of architecture and consumer products. By understanding how sound waves behave and how people respond to them, you will help to engineer a better sounding world. Salford has pioneered acoustics teaching and research for over 60 years. Recognised by the UK Institute of Acoustics with a route to Chartered Engineer status, our acoustical and audio engineering degree course will guide you through the creative science and engineering involved in shaping and managing sound, whether designing sound for VR games, or noise barriers to quieten high-speed rail. Based in our Peel Park campus, minutes from central Manchester, you’ll use cutting-edge acoustic studios and facilities and learn alongside research taking place in our world-class Anechoic Chamber and Reverberation Suite. Initially, you’ll gain an understanding of the mathematics and physics principles of acoustics, exploring analogue electronics, digital signal processing, audio systems and speaker design. As you progress, you’ll shape your degree around your interests, choosing optional modules in speech, environmental noise measurement and psychoacoustics. Our graduates are equipped solid prospects for a career in consultancy, production or product design. Many choose careers working with leading acoustics and audio consultants and specialists, including Apple, Arup, BBC, Dolby, and Bang and Olufson. **Features** This course is a four year integrated Masters course. - Learn the design principles that achieve the best possible audio reproduction in modern music products, recording studios, loudspeakers and venues - Discover how music, speech and other sounds are perceived and how this influences the design of applications, products and buildings - Understand the fundamental acoustic principles, such as Fourier’s theorem, 3D wave equation, the finite string and radiation impedance - Develop analytical, numerical and computer-based problem-solving solving skills - Cover popular business and management theory and enterprise leadership to prepare for your future career in acoustics and audio.
