Sociology with Social Science Foundation Year

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We’re proud to be ‘University of the Year for Student Experience’ in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, in addition to having been ranked No.1 in the National Student Survey 2014-2016. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. The Social Science Foundation Year is a well established course, providing the ideal preparation to study for a degree across a wide range of disciplines including law, politics, sociology, criminology, international relations and many more. Contemporary society is complex and ever evolving; this course offers the opportunity to develop questioning and analytical skills and to understand the issues and changing ideas in modern society. The social sciences seek to address difficult questions and offer answers that might point the way to a more just and sustainable future for humanity. After you have completed your Social Science Foundation Year, you could progress on to the Sociology programme. This course will provide you with a grounding in the core concepts of Sociology. You will develop skills in social research and explore a range of important social issues. The course covers a wide range of topics including families, health, activism and protest, social media, globalisation, and urban life. The Sociology course involves a mix of compulsory and research-led modules to enable you to think independently, critically, and imaginatively about the issues that shape our everyday lives and our futures. Through a mix of lectures, seminars, and workshops you will study societies, social problems, and the ways in which they impact upon the lives of individuals. We will consider how our lives are shaped by relationships with other people, institutions, habits, and ways of thinking that make up the complex societies in which we live. You will be encouraged to develop sociological explanations for the wide-ranging changes taking place in the contemporary world and think about potential solutions to social problems. In the final year of your studies, you will receive individual tuition to carry out your own piece of social research.
