Education with Social Science Foundation Year

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We’re proud to be ‘University of the Year for Student Experience’ in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, in addition to having been ranked No.1 in the National Student Survey 2014-2016. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. The Social Science Foundation Year is a well established course, providing the ideal preparation to study for a degree across a wide range of disciplines including law, politics, sociology, criminology, international relations and many more. Contemporary society is complex and ever evolving; this course offers the opportunity to develop questioning and analytical skills and to understand the issues and changing ideas in modern society. The social sciences seek to address difficult questions and offer answers that might point the way to a more just and sustainable future for humanity. After you have completed your Social Science Foundation Year, you could progress on to the Education course. You will study educational topics such as the nature of learning, the history of education, and educational policies and practices that aim to promote inclusion and social cohesion. Studying Education at Keele, either on its own or along with another subject, will help you explore the many ways that education is changing along with society. The course examines topics such as changing ideas about childhood, learning, digital technologies, citizenship, race, play, work, the political nature of schools, for instance, the impact of poverty on both the results and the experience of education. You will also have opportunities to explore these issues abroad by doing an International Year, which can lead to an enhanced degree title in ‘BA (Hons) in Education with International Year’.
