Education and Music - Keele University

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We’re proud to be ‘University of the Year for Student Experience’ in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, in addition to having been ranked No.1 in the National Student Survey 2014-2016. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Education and Music. Education and Music provide a great combined degree if you are interested in creativity, music, learning and the links between them. This combination of degree subjects would be the ideal choice if you are interested in pursuing a career in teaching involving music. You will study educational topics such as the nature of learning, childhood development, as well as the history of education and changes to educational policies and practices. You will investigate music in a wide range of contexts, as well as focusing on the creation and performance of music. You’ll examine its meaning and uses in a diversity of styles, periods and traditions, through topics including history, aesthetics, and the social impact of music. You can also take a work placement module studying music in the community. Music at Keele is a hub of world-class musicologists, composers and performers, and the musical life on campus is rich and varied. When you graduate, you might choose to do a PGCE and become a teacher. If you are thinking of travelling or working abroad after graduation, Keele’s Language Centre offers a variety of courses that may enable you to graduate with an enhanced degree with foreign language competency or an internationally recognised qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Students who have studied Education and Music have also entered a wide variety of careers including local government, media and communications, sales and marketing, banking, and the legal profession. You could follow a career in arts administration, orchestras, bands, a recording company, publishing, game design, film, radio or television. You may also choose to pursue postgraduate study.
