Economics and Mathematics - Keele University

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We’re proud to be ‘University of the Year for Student Experience’ in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, in addition to having been ranked No.1 in the National Student Survey 2014-2016. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Economics and Mathematics. Studying Economics and Mathematics at Keele will help you develop the knowledge and skills to understand how economics underpins the functioning of government, business and households. At the same time you will learn the mathematical skills to give you proficiency in data handling, problem solving and analysis. These skills are all highly regarded and sought after by employers in financial services, commerce and industry. In Mathematics modules, you will deepen your understanding of pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. You will learn to apply your skills to a range of economic contexts at micro and macro level. You will develop precise arguments and present results to a wide range of audiences. In Economics modules, you will learn about markets, risk and currencies in micro and macro perspectives. By combining theoretical analysis with up to date knowledge about current issues you will explore the formulation and effects of public economic policies. Under the supervision of our internationally recognised and approachable tutors, you will have the opportunity to use professional software tools such as Bloomberg and Stata in our dedicated IT suite to analyse and interpret real economic data. Both Mathematics and Economics help you take novel approaches to problem solving and critical interpretations of data and text. The skills you will acquire are in high demand from employers in business and government. You might choose to work as an economist in the City or in the Government Economic Service. You could go into banking, insurance, accounting, software development or management consultancy. Jobs such as an investment analyst, actuary, statistician or financial advisor would also be options for you. You may also study for a postgraduate qualification in either subject.
