Criminology with Social Science Foundation Year

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We’re proud to be ‘University of the Year for Student Experience’ in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, in addition to having been ranked No.1 in the National Student Survey 2014-2016. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. The Social Science Foundation Year is a well established course, providing the ideal preparation to study for a degree across a wide range of disciplines including law, politics, sociology, criminology, international relations and many more. Contemporary society is complex and ever evolving; this course offers the opportunity to develop questioning and analytical skills and to understand the issues and changing ideas in modern society. The social sciences seek to address difficult questions and offer answers that might point the way to a more just and sustainable future for humanity. After you have completed your Social Science Foundation Year, you could progress on to the Criminology degree. Criminology is a rapidly developing field which draws on insights and methods from disciplines such as law, social sciences, and psychology to explore crime, crime control and justice from a range of perspectives. You will examine such issues as the impact of crime on society and on victims. You will be able to gain insights into how society responds to crime through systems of crime control, the workings of our criminal justice institutions, as well as through media representations. You will gain a critical understanding and detailed insight into the politics and development of criminal justice policy. You will learn about the nature and causes of crime and offending and explore the methods used to collect and analyse criminological data - vital skills for a future career in a range of sectors, including criminal justice.
