Chemistry and Physics - Keele University

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We’re proud to be ‘University of the Year for Student Experience’ in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, in addition to having been ranked No.1 in the National Student Survey 2014-2016. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Chemistry and Physics. Both Chemistry and Physics score highly in the National Student Survey and are characterised by a high level of contact time and support from academic staff. Combining two core physical sciences develops not only your scientific skills but also builds strong problem solving, team working and communications skills that are highly prized by prospective employers. In Chemistry, you will develop a solid foundation of theoretical and practical skills. You'll progress to cover advanced concepts and contemporary issues in later years of your degree. You can tailor your studies to reflect your interests and learn how to pursue your own research. You’ll have hands-on experience with state-of-the-art scientific instruments and techniques and enjoy access to dedicated IT facilities. You will learn to use chemistry in problem solving and to present your theories and findings confidently and imaginatively to your audiences. Physics is a fundamental, curiosity-driven discipline with applications in many other areas of science and technology. You will gain an understanding of the subject fundamentals, including quantum mechanics, relativity and electromagnetism, and apply this knowledge to solve problems, plan investigations and report your work. A Chemistry degree at Keele will equip you to confidently and skillfully pursue your chosen career. You might work in industry, research or education; or become a chemical engineer, research scientist, toxicologist, patent lawyer, analytical chemist or technical write. Many students go onto higher study after a first degree in chemistry, to specialise in an area of interest such as analytical, forensic, synthetic or materials chemistry. Employers value numerate, versatile graduates who can communicate. With a Keele Physics degree you could take up roles as a medical physicist, geophysicist or enter the space, telecommunications or nuclear industries. You may instead find employment as a science writer, chartered accountant or IT consultant. Many of our graduates go onto further study at master’s or PhD level.
