Mathematics with Accounting and Finance - Aberystwyth University

Mathematics with Accounting and Finance is a major/minor programme, meaning that you will spend two-thirds of your time studying Mathematics and one-third studying Accounting and Finance. You will develop your appreciation of advanced mathematical and statistical techniques and their application in the key areas of business finance and accountancy. Teaching for the degree is shared between the Department of Mathematics and the Aberystwyth Business School and you will benefit from the expertise of our lecturers in both disciplines. In addition to the mathematical and analytical skills, you will acquire through your Mathematics with Accounting and Finance Degree, you will also gain a broad range of transferable skills that are highly valued by employers. Mathematics has been taught at Aberystwyth since 1872, so that the department builds on over 140 years of teaching excellence, employing lecturers who are committed teachers and internationally-recognised researchers. Several modules are available either entirely or partially through the medium of Welsh. In the first year, you will follow a clearly defined pathway through the core disciplines, including algebra and calculus, coordinate and vector geometry, probability, mathematical analysis and statistics. In Accounting, you will be introduced to the three key areas of financial accounting, management accounting, and financial management. In the second and third years, you will study real analysis, abstract and linear algebra as core subjects, supplemented by a range of optional modules. In Accounting, you will further develop your competencies in management accounting and financial accounting, and will additionally focus on investment analysis, portfolio selection, risk management and corporate finance. This course has been designed with future employment in mind. The skills you will develop are all highly transferable and attractive to employers. These include research and data analysis, enhanced mathematical and computational skills, problem-solving, creative thinking, time management and organisational skills. You will have a thorough grounding in information technology and the ability to express ideas and communicate information in a clear and structured manner by the end of your degree. This course will challenge you to develop your teamwork, self-reliance and self-motivation. Real work experience will make you stand out in a competitive job market.
