Law with Spanish - Aberystwyth University

The LLB Law with Spanish degree at Aberystwyth University has been designed to meet the need for a generation of lawyers equipped both legally and linguistically to deal with the legal business. This degree scheme combines the expertise of the Department of Law and Criminology with that of the Department of Modern Languages. It will also provide you with a high level of competence in the Spanish language, and a good understanding of the culture. You will benefit from the experience and enthusiasm of the expert staff in both departments. The LLB Law with Spanish is a practical Law degree designed to meet employer needs and taught by experienced legal professionals and academics. Upon completion, you will be eligible to continue vocational training on the Legal Practice Course (LPC), or the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC). During the four years of this course, you will have a selection of core and optional modules that you will have to study. Some of the modules on this course could grant you exemption from certain professional examinations. The research that is conducted in the Department of Law and Criminology feeds directly into the teaching of our undergraduate courses. Some of our esteemed teaching staff are active researchers for large organisations e.g. GRETA, the Country Side Commission for Wales, the Youth Justice Board, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. For all students in the Department, life after university is important to us. During the four years of this degree, you will have the opportunity to visit various employment events where you will meet and have the opportunity to network with the legal industry. Both departments have various extracurricular opportunities where students who have a similar interest in the relevant subjects meet. The Department encourages all students to participate in our national and international competing Mooting Society, in order to develop key advocacy and litigation skills. For students who are studying Law through the medium of Welsh, we also offer a Welsh medium Mooting. In the first year, you will receive core training in a number of foundation subjects which must be studied and passed for the purpose of obtaining an exemption from the first stage of professional law examinations; these include Contract law and Criminal law. You will also explore the structure and development of the English, Welsh and international Legal systems, learn about the significance of judicial precedent and its relationship with the court system, and analyse the processes of creating legislation and how it is interpreted by judges. As well as this, you will be studying the core 30-credit language module in Spanish. Each year, in the core module, you will acquire and consolidate the three skills: writing, speaking and listening. In the first year, especially, in lectures and small groups, we seek to consolidate your knowledge of Spanish grammar and to impart the necessary terminology to enable you to talk about the Spanish language. Various methods are used to raise your language awareness and to improve your linguistic skills, e.g. translating sentences into and out of Spanish, free composition and grammar exercises. You will also get plenty of oral practice and the opportunity to hone your listening skills. The small groups give you the chance not only to speak Spanish but to practice your presentation skills and to learn more about the cultural context in which the language is used. In the second and third years, you will be introduced to the Law of Torts, Public Law, European Law, and Equity and the Law of Trusts, which you need to study in order to gain exemption from the Law Society and Bar Part I examinations. You will also be able to tailor your study through careful selection from a range of elective modules in Law as well as taking the 30-credit core language module in Spanish.
