Brussels, 23 Mar 2005

The European Research Council (ERC) Identification Committee submitted its interim report to the Commissioner for Science and Research, Janez Potoc(nik on 21 March 2005. The report presents the criteria and methodology to be used to identify members of the Governing Council of a future European Research Council.

The ERC Identification Committee was set up by Commissioner Potocnik as an independent body of eminent scientists, under the chairmanship of former European Commissioner Lord Patten of Barnes.

Having consulted the main representative organisations of the European research community, the Committee has established the factors and criteria that should be taken into account in the identification of members of the Governing Council of a future European Research Council, and defined the methodology to be adopted in the identification process. It will now invite the same representative organisations to submit the names of candidates for the Governing Council.

As in the first stage of its work, the Committee also invites the views of other representative organisations who wish to contribute.

Such contributions should follow the guidance given in the Committee's interim report, and should be sent to the following address: rtd-erc@cec.eu.int.
