South Korea is to pursue participation in the EU's Galileo satellite navigation project, and will send a formal letter of intent in the spring.
The government decision was made during a science-related ministers' meeting on 24 February, according to press reports in South Korea.
The country currently uses the US GPS system, and will continue to do so, but is keen to have a back-up. In addition to ensuring an alternative satellite navigation system to GPS, participation in Galileo will boost sales of global positioning service-enabled mobile phones. Handset designers and manufacturers will be able to increase their project range as they embrace both systems, thus maintaining competitiveness.
Galileo is a joint initiative between the EU and the European Space Agency (ESA). It has attracted widespread interest internationally, and in particular from Russia, China, Israel, Ukraine and India.
