Euroscience has announced that it has received three bids to host the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF) in 2008. The three competing cities are Barcelona, Genoa and Naples.

ESOF is a biennial pan-European scientific meeting staged to provide an forum for open dialogue, debate and discussion as well as showcasing European achievements across the scientific spectrum. Successfully launched in Stockholm, Sweden in 2004, where it attracted 1,800 visitors from 67 countries, the next edition of ESOF will be held in 2006 in Munich, Germany, from 15 to 19 July. ESOF 2006 will address the role of science in society and how science can address society's concerns.

The applications from Barcelona, Genoa and Naples are currently being evaluated. Peter Tindemans, who chairs the selection committee, commented: 'It is encouraging to see three cities battling to be Europe's city of science in 2008, and especially pleasing to see three Mediterranean cities seeking this honour and this responsibility. It shows that ESOF is a truly European endeavour as it has moved from Stockholm in 2004 to Munich next year and then on to southern Europe'.

Jean-Patrick Connerade, the President of Euroscience, also expressed pleasure at the bids, adding: 'All three cities have tremendous potential and bring their own individual character to the proposals. In all cases the bids bring together their scientific community with political and business leaders from the area, so demonstrating the importance and relevance of science to economic well being and quality of life of their citizens. Euroscience sees this event as a key meeting in Europe's science calendar'.

The selection process will be completed by the end of November and an announcement of the winning bid will be made shortly thereafter, once the decision has been confirmed by the Euroscience governing board.

ESOF was founded by Euroscience, a grass-roots organisation created in 1997 with over 2,000 members in 40 countries. It represents European scientists of all disciplines (including social sciences and the humanities) working in the public sector, universities, research institutes as well as business and industry.
