Feeling safe while studying is a top consideration for many prospective students when they start thinking about where to go to university. Enjoying a sense of security, comfort and happiness during your time at college can make the difference between staying on and getting a good degree or deciding to look elsewhere or even drop out altogether.

As part of the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2017, more than 15,000 students were asked the extent to which they agreed that their university offered “good security”. The table below shows how the UK’s institutions perform on this question.

Leo Blanchard, an English literature student at the University of Surrey, which comes top in this category, says in a blog that “one of the best things about Surrey is how safe it is. I have never felt personally in danger during my time here, even when walking home later at night.”
